A disappointing embarassment

I chose Jan Kish because she was supposed to be on of the best, I was sorely disappointed. My dress was a black and white Maggie Sottero and the cake was being made to match the pattern in the pleats of the skirt. The top was to be white fondant and the bottom black fondant. When we originally spoke to Jan we were quoted $8-900 for a three tier cake in the flavors of her white swan cake, the chocolate cinnamon chili, and the key lime margarita. This was supposed to be approx 100 servings. We paid her $800 before the next meeting. At the final meeting we decided to go with a taller more slender design for the cake. Still with the same exact design I wanted and had specified before. The change was just one more tier on top that would become the key-lime tier and we would make the third tier carrot cake, upping the servings to around 120. This change ran another $500 on top of the $800 we had already paid. We were then given the options of using crystals on the cake to match the beading in the design on my dress, either regular crystals or Swarovski or if we chose to not use crystals she said it could be painted with a silver color to match. We were told that the regular crystals had to be ordered 15 yards at a time or the Swarovski could be ordered by the yard. I admit I have a slight love of Swarovski crystal and wanted to go with that option. I want this cake to look as best as possible. Jan told us that the crystals ran about $65 a yard and after measuring one of the model cakes said we would need 2 yards. So we ask her to let us know about the price on the Swarovski and we would let her know. Also we were told that around the crystals she would hand pipe the little flowers that were embroidered on my dress to make it match perfectly. Well She talked to my fiance a couple days later and told him that it would be $285 for the crystals. He told her to order them without letting me know how expensive they were so I tried to call her once I found out about it. Unfortunately she had already ordered said crystals and nothing could be done about it. I asked her why it cost so much more than she had said and she told me that it was because that due to the swirls and curvature of the crystal we needed 3 yards. So in the end we paid $799 on top of the $800 we had already paid to get a 4 tier black and white cake made with Swarovski crystals on it. The cake I received was not black and white, it did not have flowers piped around the crystals to match the embroidery, I could see obvious seams where the GREY fondant was not properly smoothed and adhered. These things did not stand out to just me my guests noticed them as well. Now the flowers were beautiful but pretty flowers did not make up for this cake. I measured the crystal the day after the wedding as I had them save it so we could maybe use it again some day for something else. Upon measuring I discovered that only 2 yards 18 inches had been used on my cake. Since I had been told that we paid for 3 yards I would have liked to have the other half a yard sent with the cake for us to have. The cake was the only thing really wrong with my wedding but I will never forget how poorly this cake was done. I wanted the best, I thought I had the best, I was sorely wrong.

I had our grooms cake made by Cake Dots and it was the most wonderful cake. It exceeded my expectations and made a very happy groom. I actually did a little happy dance when I saw the cake, I was so pleased with it. I very highly recommend this cake lady, she is amazing =) The cake itself tasted great and the decorating was top notch. I couldn't be more pleased! =)
